Itinerary

Day 1

HOBART 

Welcome to nipaluna /Hobart. Settle into your accommodation and enjoy some free time to explore Tasmania’s capital city at your leisure. You may wish to explore Salamanca Markets to grab a famous scallop pie or sourdough raspberry jam donut. Taste local preserves and cheeses, or local gin, whisky and wine. Stock up on merino gloves and a beanie and stop by Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery to see a Tasmanian tiger and learn about Antarctica. Our guided tour of Tasmania commences in the morning.

Day 2

JOURNEY TO THE WESTERN WILDS

Waterfalls, rainforests and wild scenery await. Today is about leaving the city behind and igniting the senses which come alive in the rainforest. We’ll enjoy several of Tasmania’s loveliest waterfalls including the majestic Russell Falls which cascades amid towering trees—some of the tallest in the world, in Mount Field National Park. Surrounded by the World Heritage wilderness, we venture to Lake St Clair and through misty rainforests, taking in sweeping vistas over buttongrass plains as we traverse the Franklin-Gordon National Park. See the flowing tea-stained waters of the Franklin River and check out the stunning Nelson Falls. Our day ends in the charming harbourside village of Strahan, nestled on Macquarie Harbour.

Day 3

WEST COAST WILDERNESS & GORDON RIVER CRUISE

Cruise along the Gordon River which offers a scenic journey through Tasmania’s pristine wilderness. We’ll experience the ancient rainforests and visit the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. Later, we’ll visit the wild and windswept Ocean Beach, where the invigorating winter breeze carries the purest air in the world. As evening falls, we’ll return to the historic charm of Strahan for our final night on the West Coast.

Day 4

CRADLE MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK

Discover Tasmania’s crown jewel and a winter wonderland: Cradle Mountain National Park. Walk the iconic Dove Lake Circuit or enjoy a shorter option to Glacier Rock or the Boat Shed on the shores of the glacial caved Dove Lake with views to the rugged peaks of Cradle Mountain. We’ll look for wombats, pademelons, and echidna, which are often more active in winter. Afterward, we’ll visit Sheffield, the Town of Murals, before arriving in Launceston.

Day 5

EAST COAST WINTER MAGIC

Make way for peacocks and wallabies as you stroll around Cataract Gorge, located in the heart of Launceston. Then, we’re eastward bound through sweeping farmlands with vast horizons, to the charming seaside town of St Helens for lunch. Shoes are optional as you walk along the brilliant white sands of the Bay of Fires. Do you dare to bathe in the cold the clear turquoise waters? Our destination is Bicheno, a picturesque coastal town which is home of the little penguin.

Day 6

FREYCINET NATIONAL PARK

Rise early and be the first to Wineglass Bay lookout for impressive views of the dazzling sands and emerald waters. There are several walks to choose from today such as Mt Amos for the adventurous, or perhaps you’re prefer to relax on a secluded beach. The colours of Freycinet National Park come alive in winter’s soft light. View the pink granite peaks of the Hazards mountains from tranquil Honeymoon Bay. Take in the Tasman Sea and sweeping views of the Freycinet Peninsula from the lighthouse at Cape Tourville, where the winter light casts dramatic shadows over the coastline. Finally, it’s time to journey along the scenic Great Eastern Drive back to Hobart.

  • The walking in Tasmania is world-class, and we’ve selected beautiful walking experiences for our guests (we include many of the 60-great-short-walks of Tasmania)
  • Some walks are guided, while others are unguided (free walking)
  • In many locations there is a choice between an easier or more advanced option
  • Essentially, you can make this as active or as easy as you like; all walks are optional and range from 20 minutes up to 4 hours
