How active is this tour?
- The Tasmanian Discovery Comfort Tour is a nature-based tour, involving guided short walks in our National Parks every day.
- Guests should have moderate fitness and good mobility. In many locations, there is a choice between an easier or more advanced walk. Example walks: Russell Falls and Cape Tourville (Easy), Dove Lake Circuit and Wineglass Bay Lookout (Moderate). Tracks may have steps, gravel, and uneven surfaces.
- These dedicated Comfort style tours are comparatively easier and more relaxed than the Original style tours. If you have any concerns about accessibility, fitness or mobility, please contact Under Down Under for advice prior to booking.
Itinerary
Day 1
HOBART TO QUEENSTOWN
Start your day at the vibrant Salamanca Market, where you can enjoy a delicious breakfast and browse local handicrafts. Leaving Hobart, our wilderness adventure begins at Mount Field National Park, where we’ll walk beneath some of the world’s tallest trees and visit the stunning Russell Falls. Continuing west, we’ll stop at Lake St Clair, Australia’s deepest freshwater lake, before journeying through the rugged landscapes of Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. Here, we’ll take short walks along the tannin-rich waters of the Franklin River and to the picturesque Nelson Falls. As we travel further west, we’ll pass sweeping buttongrass plains and take in breathtaking views around Queenstown, a former historic mining hub and now a vibrant West Coast destination.

Day 2
GORDON RIVER CRUISE TO TULLAH
Cruise along the magnificent Gordon River. This outstanding river cruise explores Macquarie Harbour as far as the imposing Hells Gates. You’ll explore the convict site of Sarah Island before venturing upriver and deeper into the World Heritage rainforests. Stroll amid the ancient huon pines on the boardwalk and enjoy lunch aboard the ship featuring Tasmanian produce. This afternoon, journey to the tiny town of Tullah. On a clear day, magnificent views across Lake Rosebery are possible of the rugged peaks of Mount Murchison. Tonight, we’ll enjoy a group dinner and relax in the lakeside lodge.

Day 3
TULLAH TO CRADLE MOUNTAIN
Experience the iconic Cradle Mountain National Park. Your guide will explain several options to suit your preferences today. At Ronny Creek we’ll meander along the boardwalk to look for wombats. At Dove Lake, spend 2-3 hours circling the glacial carved lake beneath towering mountains and diverse alpine vegetation. Or take in the valley views from the Boat Shed or Glacial Rock. This afternoon, enjoy the “Town of Murals” at Sheffield, before arriving in Launceston in northern Tasmania.

BAY OF FIRES > SCAMANDER
Take a leisurely walk in Cataract Gorge, a scenic nature reserve nestled along the South Esk River, just minutes from downtown Launceston. Enjoy the tranquillity of its fern-lined paths, suspension bridge, and panoramic lookouts. From here, travel through rolling farmlands and quaint townships toward Tasmania’s East Coast. Upon reaching Larapuna/Bay of Fires, you’ll be greeted by a dramatic change in landscape—bright white sands, vivid turquoise waters, and striking orange-hued granite boulders. This evening we’ll stay in Scamander, overlooking the picturesque beach and calm waters of the Scamander River.

FREYCINET NATIONAL PARK > ORFORD
This morning, you will meet Tasmanian devils at a wildlife sanctuary, before passing through Bicheno on our way to Freycinet National Park. This coastal gem has secluded bays, pristine beaches, and inviting woodland forests. At Honeymoon Bay, marvel at the striking pink granite peaks of the Hazards Mountains. Hike to the famous Wineglass Bay lookout for unforgettable views of its perfect crescent-shaped beach, one of Tasmania’s most iconic sights. Then, visit Cape Tourville for breathtaking panoramas of the Tasman Sea and the rugged Freycinet coastline.

TASMAN PENINSULA > HOBART
Travel to the Tasman Peninsula and explore Tasman National Park with its geological wonders of the Tessellated Pavement, Tasman Arch, and Devil’s Kitchen. At UNESCO World Heritage listed Port Arthur Historic Site, discover this fascinating open-air museum that unearths the stories of Tasmania’s convict past. Wander through the beautifully preserved buildings and expansive gardens of Australia’s best-preserved penal settlement. On our return to Hobart, we’ll stop in the historic village of Richmond and travel through the scenic Coal River Valley, completing our unforgettable journey.
